just came in for lunch. just unloaded a pickup load of ground up leaves. all are in next years onion bed, on top of the cardboard I had down to kill the grass and weeds. using the mower with a bagger to break the leaves after lunch. another nice day in Iowa.
David, it sounds like you are on your way to a REALLY GOOD soil in your onion bed. Is this the first year of using cardboard & leaves in this onion bed? It is my 4th year in two of the raised beds and the 2nd in two of the other beds. It amazes me how they decompose in one full year. My neighbors spruce trees are right next to all my raised beds. The roots from those trees LOVE the amendments I put in the garden. Twice a year I cut out roots that find their way back to the gardens.
Enjoy your beautiful Fall weather. I hope you get a lot accomplished before the COLD weather sets in.

usually all the leaves went to the compost pile. after seeing them covering the whole garden on YouTube we have expanded the leaf pick up. as for the cardboard I use it and news paper to kill off weeds and grass and then cover it with leaves for the winter. cold here today but the sun is shining highs in the upper 50's lows in the 40's. working today but will be back after the leaves tomorrow.
