This is the first year that my Carrot crop is quite successful. Straight and non-forked. Since I have been harvesting large carrots since the first week in August, it left room for the tinier carrots to mature.  Todays harvest were large, straight and sweet.  I am thinking that the taste gets better with cooler temps.  This harvest now makes room for the smaller carrots to grow to a larger size. I will be shredding and freezing some for carrot cake later in the year. I also freeze these carrots in chunks and whole for stew, soups and as a cooked veggie. YUMMY and ORGANIC.

The carrot seeds I started in August are doing great. I chopped Comfrey leaves and used them as much around the small Carrot plants.  The worms should love the Comfrey, poop and fertilize the soil. A win, win for my garden and veggies.

The over wintering experiment of my late carrot seed planting (August 2014) DID NOT produce tasty carrots. They were woody.  I left one carrot go to seed.  I will plant that seed in a pot 2016 Spring.

This years carrots were very good.  I planted 2 succession plantings.  Which means I am still harvesting carrots and there is more to come.  This week I mounded dried leaves around the base of the carrots. Hoping to prolong the ground from freezing.

A couple of weeks ago we went to our local farmers market. I saw some very pretty purple and red carrots.  I have seen them in the seed catalogs and was tempted to grow them but was worried I would like the taste so I didn't buy them.  I decided to buy one each of 'Purple Haze' and 'Red Dragon'.  YUMMY and pretty.  I will be growing these next year. 375a95a42b2d2b9a994a9d7e24b175f3.jpgImage result for image of red dragon carrot

Today I planted PURPLE HAZE and SUGARSNAX 54.  I put a small hoop house and a row cover for double protection.  Our nights can still be in the 20's, so this will give them extra protection.

I also planted companion plants of green onion and radishes with these carrots.  I hope this method will give me carrots in June.  I plan on planting more carrots in a month.

Carrots are about an inch high.  I faithfully kept them moist and covered on days under 30F.  I had them double covered.  Vented the plastic went the sun decided to shine.  I now keep them UNCOVERED when the temps are above 45F and sunny.  This year I bought 'pelleted' seed.  It was really nice to plant a larger carrot seed. This eliminates 'thinning' the carrots.

The radishes and bunch onions are also growing nicely.

I have started to harvest my carrots that are in my raised bed.  The carrots are nice and long BUT some have split vertically.  I think it might be from all the rain we have had.  I have two varieties this year.  Danver and Purple Haze.  The crop I am harvesting now was planted around the first week in May.  My second planting is in containers down in the bog garden.  I did plant a few seeds, third succession planting, directly in the bog garden.  Not coming up too good.   I will have enough to freeze and that makes me happy.  I will keep amending the soil with layers of grass clippings, dried leaves and plant debris (LASAGNA GARDENING METHOD).   Harvesting carrots the are long and straight is a sign of good soil texture.  Finally after six years of LGM.
