I planted my garlic October 25, 2016 and harvested it July 17, 2017. I planted two varieties, Music and German Hardneck. Both did excellent. The Music got a little bigger. I think I got about 40 heads. I will save the 10 biggest heads for planting this October.
I have planted garlic in years past without success. This time I planted them in my sunniest spot and the soil was very fertile. I have them hanging with good air circulation, until the tops are completely brown. I will then cut the tops off, leaving about an inch of stem. I have saved mesh bags to store them in and will keep them in my DRY DARK basement.
In June the garlic started to flower, which are called 'garlic scapes'. I cut them at the bottom of the stem and ate them. Cutting the scapes into bite size pieces and sauteing them in olive oil. I served them with my sauteed greens, salt, pepper and BUTTER. YUMMY!

Beautiful garlic harvest. I planted small cloves last fall and hence my harvest was smaller bulbs. I don't use a lot of fresh garlic so I will have enough. But when I was at the local farmers market I bought some large bulbs that I plan to use as my planting cloves in October.
