I know you are going to think that I have LOST IT!  I started 3 pumpkin seeds on 2-7-12 in my HEAT BOX SEED GERMINATOR. From the cell pack to a 3" pot and today into a quart pot (yogurt container). They have their 2 set of true leaves and the root system looks great. They are in my south facing window now. If this method of starting seeds too early doesn't work, I won't do it next year. I will only be out '3 seeds', no big deal...I have more seeds if I need them. Our growing season here in Wisconsin is so short. I wanted to have some mature plants to transplant outside in Spring. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Starting my pumpkins 8 weeks early IS NOT A DO AGAIN. I ended up throwing them out. They grew way to fast and started to vine and flower, I had no room for them.  I will start my seeds next week. Live & Learn...my way of gardening, usually.

I planted my pumpkin seed 8 days ago. They are up and beginning to get their first set of true leaves.  I transplanted them into a galvanized laundry tub that I drilled holes in. I used the same soil mix I used on all my veggies and covered the top of the soil with straw. I placed chicken wire around the container to help keep the raccoon from digging in the new soil. I hope we get a few pumpkins for my Granddaughters.

DSC03995.JPGImage EnlargerDSC03998.JPGImage EnlargerHere are my pumpkin plants. They are on the left. I still have to lay some straw over the cardboard. This keeps the weeds down and a clean cushion for the pumpkins. I sure hope our season is long enough to give me a few pumpkins for my Grandkids. Growing in these containers gives me an option to put them any I want.  BUT they sure dry out quickly. I water almost daily. Especially in this heat wave we are having. 97 degrees so far today. This is Wisconsin. I want our cooler temps back.Cry The pallets around the garden are to help keep the deer out.

YEAH!!! I finally have pumpkins forming. The plants really look NASTY. Still a lot of flowers. I think I need to do some research to see if I should be taking off the new flowers so the pumpkins that are forming get more nutrition.Confused Do critters eat pumpkins? I have some bad boy raccoons that love visiting my gardens, plus a woodchuck. OhSurprisedand of course those pesty chipmunksYell.

One of the containers of pumpkins died...squash vine borer, I suspect. The other two containers having 2 plants in each container, have produced 8 pumpkins. Yesterday I decided, after doing some research, to trim the vines within a foot of each pumpkin. Hoping that more energy goes to that pumpkin and not making more pumpkins that wouldn't develope before a frost.  It is hard to see where each vine originates or is connected to the pumpkin growing. I had one BIG WHOOPSSurprised...I cut the vine and disconnected it from its origin. It was slightly turning orange, so maybe it will continue to ripened without being on the vine.  Oh well, I have 7 more pumpkins that are still on their vines.Smile I hope no critters get themConfused

Last Sunday my Granddaughters and I picked 8 pumpkins. They are medium size and the girls were thrilled. Next year I will try growing some in the ground & in a container. They would like me to get seeds of the huge variety.Smile I pulled out all but one vine, which has a green pumpkin yet. The other two containers I dumped on the compost pile. Fall cleanup has officially started for me.Cry

My 'Rock Star' pumpkins are now planted in three galvanized tubs. One plant per tub. The soil mixture and process I did can be seen on my tomato post 5/19.

My pumpkins 'Rock Star' are off to a very good start. I like to do companion planting so I will be scattering some dill seed in this area to attract MORE POLLINATORS. Time will tell how good these Wisconsin preferred hardy selection, 'Rock Star', will preform for me this year.SurprisedConfusedLaugh They are growing in these galvanized tubs, with holes in the bottom and sunk into the bog. I am hoping that they 'wick' the moisture, nutrients and beneficial bacteria from the bog. Plus, I am hoping the worms come up from the bog and POOP in the containerLaugh The soil in the tub is amended with compost, worm castings/worms, kelp meal, azomite rock dust, topsoil and peat.DSC05017.JPGImage Enlarger
